A well know pub to local CAMRA members it boasts of being the CAMRA Pub Of The Year (Reading & Mid-Berks) many times. It’s also famous for having quite a few ales to choose from, including a Mild.

There is a large courtyard garden area at the side of the Nag’s Head. The group may decide to sit at tables here instead of inside the pub so please also check here if you do not find any members of the group at a table inside.

If you are travelling on the train from Newbury, then it’s better to alight at Reading West and walk along Oxford Road. Quicker than staying on to Reading General and walking back. Only the hourly slow trains stop at Reading West e.g. 12.09 from Newbury (arr. 12.38). The walk from Reading station takes an extra 5 minutes but it is served by fast trains from Newbury.

The Jet Black bus from Newbury travels into Reading via Russell Street. There is a stop near the top of the road giving a 3 minute downhill walk to the pub or if you miss this stop, the next one, opposite Waylen Street, is only 2 minutes walk but involves crossing busy Oxford Road. The 11.25 bus from Newbury Wharf should arrive at Russell Street at 12.31. N.B. The bus takes a different route from Reading to Newbury and the nearest stop for the return journey is on Bath Road. The frequency is every half hour during the day time.

No CAMRA discount is available at the Nags Head.
