COTY 2019 – Hungerford Club

The Hungerford Club, Hungerford awarded Club of the Year 2019 by West Berkshire CAMRA

The Hungerford Club retains the title of Club of the Year, awarded by the West Berkshire Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

With over 500 members, the Hungerford Club is a thriving community asset and new members are always welcome. The club is home to tennis and bowls club members, and is popular for snooker, billiards and indoor games, as well as it’s popular beer festival over the August bank holiday weekend.

CAMRA campaigns to protect and promote clubs, which are important community assets that promote the social well being of their local area.  The Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror magazine with the simple aim of finding the best clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale – those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition.

Marie McConnon, Club Steward said ”I’ve been here three years now and I think my key to success is I’m really very protective of my cellar and real ales. I don’t allow anyone in my cellar and I ensure everything is spotless and maintained to the highest standard.  Fuller’s London Pride is our regular beer which is very popular and then we have a guest ale on as well.”

“I would like to make a special mention to Dave Broderick who deserves this award as much as me – he’s a very dear member who chooses every guest ale I get. He chooses really interesting beers for me, such as Tenby Harbour North Star.”

Andy Pinkard, Chairman, West Berkshire CAMRA, added “The Hungerford Club, which is also in the 2019 Good Beer Guide, is a perfect example of a community asset and it is great to recognise them again as our Club of the Year in West Berkshire. Marie is very proud of her cellar, condition of her beer, and with the support of her members, provides an excellent choice for the real ale drinker.”

The Hungerford Club is near the train station and bus routes, and is accessible on foot via Church Lane, by road via Church Street and Croft Road  Show the Good Beer Guide or CAMRA membership card for entry and ask if a member will kindly sign you in.

Marie and staff are holding a real ale festival from Saturday 24 August until Bank Holiday Monday 26 August – everyone is welcome.
